Description

Organoids split into two routes with entirely different commercial positions, and vendors rarely draw the line for you. Adult stem cell-derived organoids are grown directly from a patient biopsy or resection without reprogramming, preserving the original tissue's genetic and epigenetic make-up including clinically relevant mutations; this is the Lgr5+ route and HUB Organoids holds global IP rights to it. iPSC-derived organoids inherit the licensing position of the underlying iPSC line instead, carry a single chosen genetic background, and are as consistent as that line is. HUB publishes its licensing structure openly, which is more than most patent holders do, and states that a licence is required when industry partners wish to use the technology in-house; the Hubrecht Organoid Biobank states the same in the other direction, that academics may purchase for basic research in their own labs while commercial partners buying for in-house applications require a licence. The IP is described as four pillars covering the product, the media composition, the application in any field, and the methodology, and there is no obvious gap to design around. The shortest tech transfer package HUB offers a competent laboratory is three months and three sessions, which is the honest measure of the difficulty. Not one commercial organoid supplier publishes a price for a model. Two public bodies do publish figures that function as anchors: RIKEN distributes organoids as a formal resource class at JPY 92,840 per tube academic and JPY 185,680 for-profit, and Cell Applications publishes live prices for the accessories around its iPSC-derived organoids while quote-gating the organoids themselves.

Why this is hard to buy today

A purchase order from a company buys a model it may not be permitted to use the way it intended, because the dominant adult stem cell organoid technology is licensed separately from the material and the licence covers the product, the medium, the method and every application.

Price evidence

RIKEN BRC organoids as a published resource class: JPY 92,840 per tube academic / JPY 185,680 for-profit, an exact 2.00x multiplier (live fetch, 2026-09-01). Cell Applications organoid accessories, live-verified via store API 2026-09-01: DISCUS i-HH Gel Kit $79.00; DISCUS i-HAEpC2 Gel Kit $72.00; Dissolution Reagent $37.00; i-HAEpC2 Growth Medium Kit $192.00; i-HH Media $93.00. The i-HH hepatocyte and i-HAEpC2 alveolar organoids themselves are quote-gated. No commercial organoid supplier surveyed publishes a price for a model, and no organisation publishes a price for the HUB technology licence.

These are supplier list prices we located and recorded, not a quotation from Wetware World. Your price depends on quantity, specification and freight, and is only binding once issued in writing.

What you must specify

A quote cannot be produced without these. Anything you leave open, a supplier will assume, usually expensively.

#Parameter
01Route (adult stem cell-derived versus iPSC-derived), which decides the licensing landscape
02Tissue and, for cancer models, the indication
03Whether a physical model or a screening result is the deliverable
04Intended use (academic basic research, commercial in-house, instrument validation), which decides whether a licence is required
05Whether an expansion service is needed to reach usable numbers from a founder line
06Matrix requirement, and whether a defined alternative to Matrigel is acceptable
07Media supply, given that the media composition is itself covered by the technology claim
08Fee tier eligibility at the public banks

Quality documentation

Typically available with this item. What actually ships is confirmed on the quotation, per supplier.

  • Supplier or bank certificate of analysis
  • Identity and provenance documentation for patient-derived lines
  • Sterility and mycoplasma per supplier release testing
  • Donor consent and use-restriction documentation

Candidate suppliers

Organisations we have identified as capable. Listing does not imply a partnership, an endorsement, or that they have agreed to quote.

OrganisationBasis for inclusion
HUB Organoids Holds the adult stem cell organoid IP as four pillars (product, media composition, application, methodology) and states a licence is required when industry partners wish to use the technology in-house. Licence packages are named but carry no published price; the shortest tech transfer package is 3 months and 3 sessions. Fetched live 2026-09-01.
Hubrecht Organoid Biobank Foundation Distributes the patient-derived organoid biobank. States academics may purchase for basic research in their own labs while commercial partners buying for in-house applications require a licence. Enquiry form only, no published price. Fetched live 2026-09-01.
Crown Bioscience Organoid screening service across 14 cancer types, built on exclusive Clevers Lab HUB protocols as a licensee. The deliverable is a screening result rather than a model. No published price, captured 2026-09-01.
RIKEN BioResource Research Center National public bank publishing a full distribution fee schedule by resource class with an exact 2.00x for-profit multiplier, and charging the Clontech licence fee as a separate visible line item. Its definition of for-profit use includes non-profit research aimed at patent acquisition. Fetched live 2026-09-01.
Cell Applications Inc Public WooCommerce Store API returns live USD list prices; queried 2026-09-01. Age grade (adult / neonatal / fetal) is selectable at order and pre-screened and disease-state lots are separate SKUs.
