Description
Electrode count per well is the specification that decides what question an array can answer, and the spread across the market is not incremental. A conventional multiwell plate gives 8 to 64 electrodes per well and reports a well-average firing rate. A CMOS high-density array gives thousands per well and reports network structure, connectivity and single-cell resolution. 3Brain is the vendor that makes this concrete and, despite being cited across our MEA and biological computing coverage, has had no catalogue entry until now. Its CorePlate range spans four formats with published specifications: CorePlate 6W 38/60 integrates 4,096 bidirectional electrodes per well over a maximum seeding area of approximately 40 square millimetres at 30 by 30 micrometre electrodes on a 60 micrometre pitch, with up to 2,304 electrodes recordable at 10 kilohertz or 1,024 at 20 kilohertz per well by selecting a subset, and different subsets available to maximise either recorded area or spatial resolution; CorePlate 24W 16/50 gives 1,024 electrodes per well over approximately 10 square millimetres at 35 by 35 micrometres on a 50 micrometre pitch, with all wells and all electrodes recording simultaneously for 24,576 total and a well volume of approximately 1.8 millilitres; CorePlate 96W 16/50 gives 256 per well with the same 24,576 simultaneous total and is stated to be the first 96-well HD-MEA capable of truly simultaneous recording from every well and every electrode; CorePlate 1W 38/60 gives 4,096 electrodes in a 64 by 64 grid over 3.80 by 3.80 millimetres at 21 by 21 micrometre platinum-coated electrodes on a 60 micrometre pitch. Every electrode in the range is bidirectional and usable for stimulation. The 6W pairs with HyperCAM Alpha and the 24W and 96W with HyperCAM Delta. The two numbers that matter commercially are the total and the simultaneous total, and they are not the same number: on the 6W you select a subset, so 4,096 electrodes per well does not mean 4,096 channels at once. Read the sampling-rate line before budgeting.
Why this is hard to buy today
The headline electrode count and the number of electrodes you can actually record at once are different figures on the same product, and only the headline appears in comparison material. On the 6-well format the array carries 4,096 electrodes per well but records at most 2,304 of them at 10 kilohertz or 1,024 at 20 kilohertz, so raising the sampling rate to resolve spike waveforms more than halves the channels available. With no published price for any plate or instrument in the high-density category, a buyer cannot even work out what the electrodes they lose to that trade-off were costing them.
Price evidence
3Brain publishes complete technical specifications for every CorePlate format and no price for any of them, and publishes no price for the BioCAM or HyperCAM instruments. The figures below are DERIVED from named US federal contract awards published on USAspending.gov. Each is a real transaction price for that buyer on that date and an UPPER BOUND rather than a list price, because the obligated amount may include shipping, installation, warranty or unstated line items, and federal buyers may hold negotiated schedule pricing unavailable to other customers. (1) BioCAM DupleX platform: $162,468.70 as a single obligation, DERIVED from award PIID 75N95023P00787, US Department of Health and Human Services to 3BRAIN AG, action date 2023-09-19. (2) A CMOS array system with 4,096 channels, described in the award as commercial product name BioCAM, manufacturer 3Brain, with US distribution done exclusively through ALA Scientific: $92,885.47, DERIVED from award PIID 75N98018P00521, HHS to ALA Scientific Instruments Inc, 2018-07-30, note this is a distributor transaction and predates the DupleX generation. Neither award description states a plate or consumable quantity, so NO per-plate figure for any CorePlate format is derivable from either record and none is offered. For cross-vendor scale on the same derived basis: MaxWell MaxTwo multi-well HD-MEA platform $219,450.00 under PIID 68HE0B23P0114, EPA, 2022-12-12; Axion Maestro Pro 768-channel MEA system $184,050.00 under PIID 36C24121P0737, 2021-07-12. The only STATED unit prices in the MEA consumable category are for conventional planar arrays from a different vendor, published in the Czech public contracts register: Multi Channel Systems 60MEA200/30iR-Ti-gr at EUR 328.00 each for 25 units and 60-6wellMEA200/30iR-Ti-tcr at EUR 399.00 each for 2 units, order confirmation 800-021322-1, 2024-10-14. Those are not high-density arrays and must not be read as a CorePlate price.
These are supplier list prices we located and recorded, not a quotation from Wetware World. Your price depends on quantity, specification and freight, and is only binding once issued in writing.
What you must specify
A quote cannot be produced without these. Anything you leave open, a supplier will assume, usually expensively.
